This article will describe most common problems with Garry's Mod and how to solve them.

I cannot click on anything in Garry's Mod while playing

This problem is most likely caused by you using a Laptop Touch Pad in order to play Garry's Mod.

Please note that this is not officially supported way of playing Garry's Mod.

The actual cause of this problem is your Touch Pad's software.

There's a feature called "Palm Protection" that disables your Touch Pad completely when a key is pressed on the keyboard.

This feature exists to avoid accidental clicks while typing on your Laptop. To fix your problem, you must either disable this feature in your Touch Pad software, or buy a proper PC mouse to play the game the intended way.

Please consult your Touch Pad User Manual for information on how to disable the Palm Protection.

My Steam Workshop addons are not working

There is a trending issue with Garry's Mod when your mods from workshop will stop working and will no longer load in-game, and in main menu addon list, it will say "Nothing Found".

This issue isn't exclusive to Garry's Mod and is happening to multiple other games with Steam Workshop support, such as Left 4 Dead 2. This is an problem with Steam, not the with games.

Some people claim that setting the date and time on the computer (and/or in BIOS) to the correct one ( i.e. re-syncing your PC time ) fixes the problem.

If that doesn't work, your best bet is to contact Steam Support.

Please note that subscribing to Dupes, Saves and Demos will not work and the game will automatically unsubscribe you from Dupes, Saves and Demos.

This is due to the fact that they are not real addons/mods and are functionally unusable unless accessed from within the game itself.

I have pink and black checkerboard and ERROR signs everywhere

Possible causes:

• Missing game content such as Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2 Episodes or Team Fortress 2
• Missing mods or content packs from the Steam workshop

Solutions:

• In case of a missing game - you must buy, install and mount the game in order to be able to see and use its content
• In case of a missing mod/addon/content packs - a workshop addon must be installed. Contact server officials for more information on which addons need subscribing.

The reason behind requring other games for most User Generated Content to work is because a lot gamemodes in Garry's Mod, such as Prop Hunt, Hide and Seek, Jailbreak and more are inherited from Counter-Strike: Source, and consequently use the maps, models and textures from that game.

Controller Support

Garry's Mod does not have official controller support. While it is possible to play the game with a Steam Controller, it is in most cases impossible to map all the required actions of the game to the very limited inputs of a Controller.

Due to this, we cannot provide support in setting up any controller to work with Garry's Mod.

I get "The server is out of date", "The server is running a newer/older version of the game" messages

You will have to wait for the servers to update to the latest version of the game before you can play on them.
There is no way to downgrade your version of Garry's Mod.
You cannot fix the problem as it is not caused by you.

If that does not help, delete every occurrence of "steam.inf" file in your entire Steam library ( Garry's Mod and any mounted games to be precise ) and validate all Source Engine games.

Sprays do not work

Sometimes your console variables might get somehow changed you you will not be able to see sprays on all servers. To fix that you have to enter these commands into your Developer Console:

cl_allowdownload 1
cl_allowupload 1
cl_downloadfilter "all"
cl_playerspraydisable 0
r_spray_lifetime 2
r_decals 2048
r_drawdecals 1
mp_decals 99999

After entering all those commands, you should be able to see sprays again.

Note, that most servers purposefully disable sprays and there's nothing you can do about it.

Opening Developer Console

To open the Developer Console:

• Press SHIFT+ESC
• Press the "tilde/paragraph" key ( ` ~ )

Resetting Key Bindings / I edited/broke my key(bindings)

To open the Reset your key bindings you need to do the following:

• In Main Menu press Options
• Go to the Keyboard tab (Default Tab)
• Press the "Use Defaults" button
• In the new window press OK to confirm resetting your keybinds to defaults
• On the options window press OK to apply your settings
• Restart your game to save your settings

Sometimes this may not fully work and your Garry's Mod specific keys will be still broken, in this case you must do the following:

• Go to your GarrysMod/garrysmod/addons folder
• Delete any illegal pirated game content addons, such as Counter-Strike: Source content packs, etc
• Once done, restart your game and complete the steps above

Weapon selection is missing / no weapon scrollwheel

To fix your problem, you must disable "Fast Weapon Switch" in your Keyboard Options:

• In Main Menu press Options
• Go to the Keyboard tab (Default Tab)
• Press "Adanced..." button
• Untick the "Fast weapon switch" option and press OK to confirm
• On the options window press OK to apply your settings
• Restart your game to save your settings
